Am I a Good Candidate For BOTOX Cosmetic?
Most people who suffer from fine lines and wrinkles around their eyes, mouth, forehead, and jaw are good candidates for BOTOX Cosmetic; however, some factors do affect your candidacy, such as:
Your Expectations
While you will see the results of BOTOX Cosmetic almost immediately, it is important to keep in mind that it is not permanent, and you will need ongoing re-treatment to maintain your results. Likewise, if the wrinkles are too severe, BOTOX Cosmetic may not be enough to achieve your desired results. Talking with your doctor before BOTOX treatment is the best way to ensure your expectations are aligned with what BOTOX can provide.
Your Health
Your skin must be healthy around the injection site. If you are fighting an infection, or if you have a cut or bruising around your face, your doctor will require you to wait until that infection or injury is healed before administering the injections. You should also be in good overall health to undergo this treatment. Patients suffering from any previous nerve damage or muscle conditions may not be good candidates for BOTOX Cosmetic.
Allergies
During your consultation, your doctor will make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in the injector. If you are allergic to eggs, BOTOX Cosmetic is not a viable treatment option for you as the protein found in eggs is the same protein used in the BOTOX injections. It is important to disclose any allergies to your doctor during your consultation to avoid any complications. Call our office right away if you experience an allergic reaction after treatment.
What to Expect On the Day of Treatment
BOTOX Cosmetic is considered a "lunch break procedure" since you can come in on your lunch break and be back to work immediately after.
The first step is to talk with Dr. Hopkin so he can create a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
Potential Side Effects
BOTOX Cosmetic is one of the most performed cosmetic procedures each year. Even though it is considered safe and effective, there are always risks involved in any medical treatment. Most common side effects will go away within a few days.
Common Side Effects
- Bruising or swelling near the injection sites
- Nausea
- Facial Drooping
- Eyelid drooping
- Crooked brow
When to Call Your Doctor
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking
- Muscle weakness outside the injection site
- Muscle paralysis outside the injection site
- Loss of bladder control
Aftercare
To reduce your risk of side effects, Dr. Hopkin will give you instructions on things to avoid immediately following your procedure.
Avoid Exercise
Any strenuous activity should be avoided for up to 24 hours following your procedure. Exercise increases circulation which can increase your risk for bruising and swelling.
Do Not Touch Your Face
Do not touch, poke, or massage your face up to 24 hours following your BOTOX injections. Touching your face can cause the botulinum toxin to move outside the injection site and compromise the effectiveness of your treatment.
Do Not Lie Down
Try to remain in an upright position for at least four hours immediately following your procedure. Lying down can also cause the toxin to move outside the treatment area.
Avoid Alcohol
It is recommended to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before and following your BOTOX treatment. Alcohol is a blood thinner, which can increase your chances of bruising and swelling.
