Sinus Lift: Prepare Your Smile for Dental Implants
If you have been told that you do not qualify for dental implants because of bone tissue loss in your upper jaw, you may be a good candidate for a sinus lift. Dr. Dustin J. Hopkin performs a wide array of oral surgery procedures at his office in Salt Lake City, UT, and is trained and equipped to provide the surgical treatment you need all under one roof. As a board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Hopkin is able to perform complex cases even if you have been told that you are not a good candidate for dental implants due to bone loss.
Candidacy for Sinus Lift
Due to the proximity to the sinus cavity, the upper back jaw can prove one of the most difficult locations to place dental implants. Bone loss in your upper jaw can occur for a variety of reasons, including:
- Facial trauma
- Tooth loss
- Advanced periodontal disease
- Enlarged sinuses
Our office uses 3D imaging to accurately diagnose whether you will need a sinus lift. This technology allows Dr. Hopkin to visualize your biostructures and bones and assess the quantity and quality of your bone tissue. If you have reduced bone tissue or sinuses that are too close to your jaw, we may recommend a sinus lift to correct these issues.
Sinus Lift Surgery
To help you feel comfortable and relaxed entering your sinus augmentation, our office provides various forms of sedation. Together with Dr. Hopkin, you will choose a level of sedation that suits your unique needs and corresponds to the complexity of your surgery.
To begin the procedure, Dr. Hopkin will create an incision on your gums through which your implant will be placed. Once he has accessed the underlying jawbone, he will create a small, circular incision on the bone and lift it up into the sinus floor. The remaining space will be filled with biocompatible bone grafting material before Dr. Hopkin closes the incision on your gums. Most patients require a few months of healing before undergoing dental implant surgery. In order to expedite your healing, you are advised to quit smoking.
As a board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Hopkin is able to perform complex cases even if you have been told that you are not a good candidate for dental implants due to bone loss.
